Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can be incredibly debilitating. It’s no fun having stomach cramps while you’re out and about, or trying to put on your favourite outfit and not being able to do the buttons up properly due to bloating.

If constant stomach cramps weren’t enough, excess flatulence and other symptoms such as diarrhoea and constipation can make life pretty difficult. But the good news is that it’s estimated that good dietary changes can assist with alleviating symptoms in 75% of individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

IBS is believed to be suffered by up to 15% of the population, and some medical journals suggest that the adverse effects of IBS are similar to those experienced by people living with heart failure. So it’s not surprising some people take desperate dietary measures in an attempt to find a solution to their problem.

While such approaches are certainly understandable, they do have their risks and pitfalls. As a NZ-Registered Dietician, I’m able to help my clients explore the best path to manage and minimise the symptoms of their condition.

Individual tailored treatment plans

The symptoms of IBS vary and are different for each individual. Because they can be similar to those of other bowel disorders, such as Coeliac Disease or Bowel Cancer, it is important to begin the process of treatment with a positive diagnosis. This means working with your GP (and if necessary a gastroenterologist), as well as with a Dietician like myself.

The dietary recommendations I make will be individual to you and specific to treating your condition. Following 1 on 1 consultation and a subsequent dietary adjustment programme, many of my clients have a total or significant improvement in their symptoms, which usually has a positive impact on their total sense of wellbeing and happiness.

Once symptoms have improved, I take you through a systematic process to determine which foods are your triggers so you’re not limiting foods that don’t impact you, and you know to stay away from those that do. Following this process, you will have the information you need to control your condition, allowing you to move forward with an enhanced quality-of-life.
